Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Appears in Paris Court Following Arrest

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, was taken to court in Paris on August 28 after being held in custody, according to multiple reports. Durov’s court appearance marks the end of his initial detention period.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that Durov was transported to the court around 1:00 pm UTC. The French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) later confirmed this, citing a source close to the case. The reports suggest that Durov is facing legal scrutiny as part of an ongoing investigation.

Earlier in the day, a correspondent from RIA Novosti observed two cars with flashing lights speeding away from the National Anti-Fraud Bureau in the Paris suburbs, where Durov was believed to have been detained.

Durov was reportedly brought before an investigating judge, who now has the authority to decide whether to formally charge him. According to a source, “The investigating judge stopped Pavel Durov’s detention and summoned him for his first interrogation, where potential charges could be presented.”

Durov’s troubles began on August 24 when he was arrested at Le Bourget airport in Paris. French prosecutors released a statement on August 28 detailing that Durov’s detention was part of a judicial investigation involving various charges, including conspiracy with illegal activities, money laundering, criminal association, refusal to cooperate with authorities, and providing cryptology services without proper declaration.

French authorities had extended Durov’s detention period to a maximum of 96 hours, set to expire on August 28 at 6:00 pm UTC. As the investigation progresses, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office (Parquet de Paris) is expected to issue a formal statement regarding Durov’s arrest later today.
