A panel of justices from Brazil’s Supreme Court has unanimously upheld a ruling to suspend the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, within the country. This decision, made on September 2, supports an earlier order by Justice Alexandre de Moraes on August 30, which followed Elon Musk’s refusal to appoint a legal representative for X’s operations in Brazil.
Elon Musk, who owns X, has been openly critical of Justice Moraes, accusing him of being “evil” and a “dictator” due to what Musk describes as illegal political censorship on the platform. This conflict between Musk and the Brazilian judiciary has been escalating, particularly since Musk acquired the platform in October 2022.
The court’s action stems from an investigation led by Justice Moraes, focusing on X’s alleged role in spreading misinformation related to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Since Musk took control, several companies have pulled their advertising from the platform, concerned about controversial content, including pro-Nazi material, appearing alongside their ads.
As a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling, X will remain suspended in Brazil until it addresses outstanding fines that have accrued to more than $3 million as of August 30. Additionally, Brazilian users and companies attempting to access X through virtual private networks (VPNs) could face fines of up to 50,000 reais, approximately $8,900.
