Crypto CEO Kidnapped in Toronto, $1M Ransom Paid for Release

Toronto police are investigating the recent abduction of Dean Skurka, CEO of WonderFi, a digital assets company based in Canada. Skurka was reportedly kidnapped on November 6, during rush hour in downtown Toronto, near University Avenue and Richmond Street West. The kidnappers demanded a $1 million ransom, which was paid electronically to secure his release. He was later found unharmed at Centennial Park.

In an email statement, Skurka assured clients that WonderFi’s assets and data remained secure. This kidnapping follows a worrying trend, with crypto-related ransomware incidents increasing worldwide. Chainalysis reported that ransomware groups extorted over $1 billion in crypto payments in 2023, marking a 10% rise from previous years.

The Toronto police have yet to release additional details regarding suspects or further leads in the case. WonderFi, known for its substantial stake in Canada’s regulated crypto exchanges, has assured the public of its commitment to security. This incident mirrors another crypto-related kidnapping in Malaysia in July, where a ransom of $1.2 million in cryptocurrency was paid.
