Detroit is set to become one of the first major U.S. cities to accept cryptocurrency for tax payments, starting in mid-2025. This initiative is part of the city’s broader plan to modernize its payment systems, improve service efficiency, and attract blockchain-focused businesses to the area.
The Detroit Treasury announced on November 7 that it would enable crypto payments for taxes and other fees through a secure platform managed by PayPal. Although specific cryptocurrencies were not confirmed, PayPal’s support for major crypto assets like Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and PayPal USD hints at the likely options for Detroit residents.
Mayor Mike Duggan expressed enthusiasm about this tech-forward move, stating, “Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs. We are excited to allow residents to use cryptocurrency as a payment option.”
Additionally, Detroit is actively inviting blockchain entrepreneurs to propose ideas for civic applications of blockchain technology. The city’s Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity, Justin Onwenu, emphasized the potential benefits of blockchain, including increased accessibility, efficiency, transparency, and security. Entrepreneurs interested in pitching ideas must submit proposals by December 15.
Detroit joins a growing number of U.S. cities and states, such as Miami Lakes, Williston, Colorado, and Louisiana, which have already adopted cryptocurrency for tax and city service payments. This initiative aligns with recent pro-crypto sentiment following Donald Trump’s election victory, as the crypto industry anticipates favorable regulatory changes, including potential leadership shifts at the SEC and the establishment of a national Bitcoin reserve.
